Phelps County Is Feeding and Fueling America

DG Fuels is a U.S. owned company that produces Sustainable Aviation Fuel. It has relationships with major aviation companies including Airbus, Delta Airlines, and Air France/KLM.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel or SAF is a plant-based fuel that substitutes for petroleum-based jet fuel. Because SAF can be used in existing jet engines, it is the best way to quickly achieve net zero CO2 in the airline industry.

Emissions from aviation are a significant contributor to CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. SAF significantly reduces vapor trails and cloud formation triggered by conventional fuels.

DG Fuels gasifies biomass to create CO, also known as carbon monoxide, which is combined with hydrogen created through water electrolysis. The process creates clean energy by splitting water, or H2O, into separate molecules so that the hydrogen can be used as fuel.

DG Fuels intends to begin operations in Phelps County by 2030.

DG Fuels, with support from Governor Jim Pillen, selected Phelps County as the site for Nebraska’s first SAF plant. The exact location will be disclosed following completion of geotechnical and environmental evaluations.

The company and PCDC will collaborate to conduct extensive community outreach and information sharing programs. Informational meetings will occur regularly with local groups and individuals.

• The economic impact over the next three decades is expected to exceed $55 billion. 
• As many as half of the 650 new employees may seek housing in Phelps County. Others will commute from neighboring areas, which is the case for many existing employers. 
• DG Fuels will commit significant resources in a Community Benefit Plan that is designed to address current needs and new challenges that may be a result of this project. 
• DG Fuels will pay premiums for undervalued agricultural biomass giving farmers a significant new revenue stream. On-farm storage, delivery of biomass, are additional potential sources of income. 
• New local and state taxes will be generated by the plant, which will support local infrastructure and local schools. 
• More than 2,000 construction workers will be employed over the four-year construction schedule, who will spend wages on food, fuel and lodging. Some construction materials will be subject to state and local sales taxes. 
• The plant will stimulate creation of new entrepreneurial enterprises by residents as well as increased diversity of retail stores and other services.
