Just the Place to Retire

Big City Health Facilities with Small Town Care

Just a few good reasons to retire in Phelps County:

  • The cost of living is 29.97% lower than the U.S. average
  • The cost of housing is much lower than in urban areas
  • The crime rate is way below the national average
  • There's virtually no pollution/traffic/congestion
  • We have numerous welcoming churches
  • Quality healthcare services are plentiful and easily accessed
  • Outdoor activities - golf, hunting, fishing, bird watching - are abundant
  • There are many volunteer opportunities
  • There are numerous resources to connect seniors and integrate them with the community

More importantly, when you become a part of one of our communities, you’ll find you make friends and acquaintances with the least little effort, and that pretty quickly they remember your name at thelibrary, the YMCA, the bowling alley, and local restaurants. In Phelps County, you know - and care about - your neighbors.

Big City Health Facilities with Small Town Care

Our own 25-bed, community-owned hospital, Phelps Memorial Health Center employs 190 health care professionals providing top-quality care and advanced medical technology to residents. For example, PMHC has a fully accredited radiology department, which includes x-ray, mammography, nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), CT scan, ultrasounds, and radiologist services. You can have a baby here, get treated for cancer, even have heart surgery. Doctors in virtually every medical specialty – ENT, neurology, orthopedics, cardiology, oncology and many more — see patients locally on a regular basis. PMHC is also linked by telemedicine to specialists at larger hospitals.  For emergencies, we have a fine emergency room at PMHC, but are also only minutes away by air from one of Nebraska’s finest Level II Trauma Centers.

For day-to-day care, Holdrege is home to two fine medical groups, and a medical clinic is available in Bertrand. We are also able to offer local services in physical therapy, podiatry, dentistry/orthodontia, optometry, psychological counseling and other specialties. For Veterans, Holdrege has a modern and fully-staffed VA Outpatient Clinic offering a full range of services.

For senior citizens, Phelps County has high-quality nursing homes and assisted living facilities in Holdrege, Bertrand and Loomis.
