Bertrand - A Town that Never Met a Stranger

If you’re looking for a town where you feel like you already know about half the inhabitants, a town that welcomes people in and finds them a job to do, you will probably like Bertrand.

If you want to see everyone in Bertrand at the same time, go to the high school football game. And if you want to see everyone — or nearly everyone — who ever graduated from Bertrand High, come to the annual Bertrand Days fair, parade and professional rodeo held every year in June. The celebration also features the Bertrand alumni banquet, barbecue, horse show, volleyball tournament, community worship service, car show and plenty more. It's a big deal, and it packs ‘em in every year.

As a matter of fact, the organizing of such a big event is one way to get a sense of the kind of town Bertrand is: Bertrand Days events call for countless volunteers, and there is no shortage in Bertrand. Of course you need kids and bands and horseback riders for the parade, but Bertrand also turns residents out as cooks, ticket-takers, livestock handlers, judges, people working the booths, concessions and games, and putting out camp chairs for 1000 people and more to watch the parade. In Bertrand, volunteers rebuilt the rodeo grounds, including new pens and the stadium.

A lot to be proud of

Close-knit means that the whole town of Bertrand cares about what happens at the K-12 Bertrand Community School. Community leaders point with pride to the new addition to their gym, making it on par with any school in the state. They also point out a graduation rate above 95% that would be the envy of many urban schools, and a favorable student-teacher ratio that makes sure everyone gets individual attention.

For seniors, Bertrand has an active Senior Center as well as a city-owned  nursing home and modern assisted living facility. This allows some long-time residents - and there are more than a few - to remain in Bertrand when they are unable to maintain their own homes.

To help keep residents safe, a 38-member volunteer fire department and rescue unit trains regularly and is ready to help in an emergency. And to help keep residents on top of their golf game, a beautiful community-owned and volunteer-run 9-hole golf course is just moments away.

If you want to get involved in your community, Bertrand is just the kind of place that will welcome your participation.
