PCDC Turns Economic Development Week Into a Month With Three Major Events
May 6, 2024
The Phelps County Development Corporation (PCDC) is excited to celebrate Economic Development Week (EDW) from May 6th – May 10th. Economic development encompasses a variety of activities, from business recruitment to housing development. Every aspect of life in Phelps County is the result of economic development.
“Our team members work tirelessly throughout the year to grow the economy of Phelps County,” says Ron Tillery, Executive Director at PCDC. “We are passionate about making this region a wonderful place to live, work, and play.”
While Economic Development Week is often a time for reflection and goal setting, the staff at PCDC is attending multiple events across the community this month. These events are open to the public to celebrate the growth of Holdrege and Phelps County as a whole. Mark your calendars, here's what you need to know.
Grab a Sweet Treat at the New Holdrege Dairy Queen
Last month, we were excited to announce the construction of a new Dairy Queen location in Holdrege. The updated building will have better traffic flow, double the seating capacity, and a more modern look. The dining room can seat up to 60 people at a time and there will be outdoor seating for even greater enjoyment.
Currently, Dairy Queen employs 24 staff members, six of which are full-time. The owners expect to double the number of employees with this new location.
Not only do businesses like Dairy Queen contribute to employment in Phelps County, but they also boost the overall quality of life. Families will be able to enjoy a variety of food items and their favorite ice cream treats.
The new Dairy Queen is expected to break ground in May. Construction could be complete as early as late August but may be closer to October depending on potential material shortages, contractor schedules and weather.
Attend the Northern Meadows Housing Ribbon-Cutting
A collaboration between the City of Holdrege, Community Capital Partners LLC (CCP), and PCDC has led to the development of a new subdivision. Northern Meadows will have 30 new three-bed/two-bath single-family homes with two-car garages and unfinished basements.
These homes will be sold for $285,000. Their prices are intentionally kept lower through grants from PCDC and the Nebraska Department of Economic Development plus the use of Rural Workforce Housing Tax Increment Financing. PCDC sold the 8-acre property to CCP for a share of future revenue produced by property taxes.
The first four houses of the subdivision will be constructed this summer after a groundbreaking ceremony in May. CCP expects to build 10 houses per year.
“Housing is a critical need in Phelps County,” says Tillery. “Our team at PCDC strives to provide ample housing that is also affordable to residents. Quality housing stock will also attract new people to the region.”
Visit the New Multi-Building Office Space in Holdrege
Business owners can expand their operations and entrepreneurs can find newly built office space on 14th Avenue and Burlington Street in Holdrege. This multi-building campus is located just south of the Hy-Vee near North Park. It offers a strategic location for anyone who wants to bring their organization to Holdrege.
This office space is a $4 million project designed to create additional sites and business locations for employers. It will be the new home of Ag Service Associates, a crop insurance provider owned and operated by John Williams.
PCDC is looking forward to celebrating the ground breaking of this new office building in June.
Celebrate Economic Development in Phelps County
These three events reflect the multiple aspects of economic development that PCDC works toward. The new buildings and businesses will create jobs, provide housing, improve the overall quality of life, and contribute to tax revenue. All three of these events signify important improvements to Phelps County. We couldn't be more proud of the businesses and the PCDC staff that made them possible.
