Nuestra Familia Food Truck Opens in Hotel Parking Lot
May 29, 2026
A new food experience arrived in Holdrege in April.
The Nuestra Familia Food Truck is drawing a steady stream of customers eager for a quick and authentic Mexican meal. It is parked at the Cobblestone Inn & Suites parking lot Wednesdays through Saturdays.
For owners Jorge Almazan and Megan Almazan, the business is more than a new venture. It is the continuation of a family tradition.
Jorge grew up in Kearney, where his love for Mexican food began in his grandmother’s and mother’s kitchens.
“My grandma and my mom were always cooking,” Jorge said. “We got to eat homemade lunches and dinners every day.”
In 2005, Jorge’s mother launched her own food truck, San Judas Food Truck, serving traditional Mexican dishes throughout central Nebraska. Watching her success planted a seed that would stay with him for years.
Last year, Jorge decided it was time to pursue the same dream.
Jorge and Megan moved to Holdrege in 2019, when both were working at Janssen Auto Group. Megan, also originally from Kearney, is working toward a criminal justice degree while helping manage the new food truck business.
Nuestra Familia officially opened on April 23 and has quickly built a loyal following. The response from the community has exceeded the couple’s expectations. They are serving 50-75 people per day.
“It’s been amazing,” Jorge said. “I’m so grateful for our community and how supportive they’ve been. It’s better than expected.”
In fact, during their first few weeks, the truck sold out several times, forcing them to close early.
At Nuestra Familia, customers can order street tacos or build-your-own burrito or bowl. The bowls have become the most popular menu item, allowing customers to customize their meal with rice (Mexican or cilantro), pinto or black beans, and meats such as steak (asada), pork/chicken, or chorizo. Toppings include Pico, sour cream, queso, and guacamole. A kids menu is also available.
While the menu is designed for speed and convenience, Jorge emphasizes that the food remains deeply traditional.
“Around here, people are so busy, and having to wait 30 minutes is an inconvenience,” he said. “We wanted to offer the same homemade food but in a modern fast-food style.”
Everything is prepared fresh daily. The rice, beans and meats are made from scratch, and tortillas are made from scratch by a supplier in Grand Island.
“We don’t serve anything from the day before,” Jorge said.
The couple also hopes to soon begin sourcing fresh vegetables from local growers.
Beyond the food, Jorge says the most rewarding part of the business is seeing customers enjoy what he and Megan have created.
“The happiness I see on people’s faces when they eat our food,” he said. “That’s what I enjoy most.”
Nuestra Familia is open Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m., and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. The truck is closed Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays to allow time for preparation.
For now, the truck will remain at the Cobblestone Inn parking lot, with permission from the hotel.
Looking ahead, Jorge hopes this is just the beginning.
“I want to grow,” he said. “If things keep growing, I’d love to open a brick-and-mortar restaurant, especially because of the way this community has treated us. We definitely want to get involved in the community.”
