The Benefits of Manufacturing Extend Beyond Job Creation in Phelps County
September 25, 2024
Manufacturing plays an important role in the economy of Phelps County. Manufacturers are some of the biggest employers in the area, drawing from a skilled workforce that appreciates the high quality of life that the region has to offer. However, manufacturing benefits everyone in Phelps County – not just people who are directly employed by major firms.
“We have noticed several ripple effects that come with bringing manufacturers to the area,” says Ron Tillery, Executive Director of the Phelps County Development Corporation (PCDC). “Other industries have grown because of these firms, and new opportunities have come to Phelps County as a result.”
Look beyond the manufacturing plants and consider the big picture of how this industry supports the local economy. Here are three ways Phelps County is stronger because of the manufacturers who move here.
Manufacturing Creates High-Paying Jobs
The first way manufacturing supports the local economy is by creating high-paying jobs. As of 2021, there are more than 101,000 manufacturing employees in the state of Nebraska, who earn an average annual wage of $74,949. This is significantly higher than the median annual salary in the United States, which is $59,384, and higher than the Nebraska median average of $56,784.
These salaries allow employees to support their families and invest in local economies. Workers can afford to purchase homes (which means they pay property taxes), buy from local businesses, and engage with their communities.
“The idea that manufacturing is low-skill, low-wage work is a myth,” says Tillery. “We have seen manufacturers invest in the local workforce and train their employees. This helps them build long-term careers and increase their earning potential.”
Manufacturing accounts for 12.3% of Nebraska's total workforce, slightly more than the national average of 10.0%.
Every $1 Spent in Manufacturing Contributes $2.69 to the Economy
You can see the benefits that manufacturing has on local communities by looking at the larger economic impact of this industry. Every dollar spent on manufacturing contributes $2.69 to other parts of the economy. This includes everything from the hospitality sector to retailers and other small business owners.
Manufacturers often work with a wide range of vendors and local partners. They support these companies by hiring their services and purchasing their goods, further growing the Nebraska economy. However, manufacturing firms also benefit the quality of life in local economies. Employees have the disposable income to eat at Phelps
County restaurants, enjoy their favorite breweries, and support the arts and small businesses near them.
Manufacturers Are Small Businesses
Another myth is that manufacturers are large corporations that export their profits to headquarters outside of Nebraska. However, the majority of manufacturing companies are small, local firms.
As of 2021, there are 238,851 manufacturing firms in the United States. Only 3,920 of them (1.6%) have more than 500 employees. A staggering 93.4% have fewer than 100 employees, and 75% of manufacturing companies have fewer than 20 employees.
This data holds true for Nebraska's manufacturers. As of 2015, small businesses accounted for 81% of Nebraska's total exports to the rest of the world.
“Working for manufacturing companies and supporting this industry means you are investing in small, local businesses,” says Tillery. “The profits from these companies often stay in Phelps County and contribute to the local economy and tax base.”
Manufacturing's footprint extends well beyond employment numbers. It also supports various vendors and B2B service providers in the area, boosts recreational businesses, and contributes to the tax base.
