Holdrege - Life in the Heart of the Heartland

The idealized version of a Midwestern small town might contain wide streets lined with big trees, houses with comfortable porches, kids on bikes and the sound of church bells on Sunday mornings.

Holdrege has all that.

Maybe your ideal place would also have a picturesque downtown with brick streets and a train station where the train actually stops, or maybe it would be a town where they get to know your name at the bank, the dry cleaners, the butcher and the gas station. Maybe your ideal town cheers on the high school teams like they were all-America every week, win or lose, and holds parades and community events where everyone - everyone - turns out because, well, because it's their town.

Holdrege has that too.

Your idealized town may not have a modern YMCA, a state-of-the-art performing arts center and high-speed Internet connectivity, but you’ll still find them here.

Holdrege doesn't have an Imax or a Whole Foods - but we're okay with that. We do have two grocery stores, a cool renovated movie theater, and local coffee shops. If you're looking for a place where housing is affordable, crime is low, traffic is slow, schools are excellent, healthcare infrastructure is first-rate, and you get to know - and care about - your neighbors, Holdrege might be just the place for you.

A nice place to visit...or live

Holdrege is the main population center of Phelps County. Among our more progressive amenities, we count the YMCA of the Prairie, a state-of-the-art facility completed in 2007 and  The Tassel, truly one of the nicest performing art centers between Lincoln and Denver.

We have two popular city parks. North Park has picnic pavilions, a lake stocked with fish, an arboretum and a beautiful George Lundeen sculpture called “Promise of the Prairie” that suggests what the first settlers in the area must have felt as they gazed out on our boundless plains. South Park is where you'll find the municipal swimming pool and our Frisbee golf course. South of the park, you'll find a hiking trail leading to  Lake Seldom, an exceptional bird watching site, especially during the active spring and fall migrations.

The Holdrege Area Public Library is considered one of the best in rural Nebraska. Our Senior Center is modern and active, with a variety of programs for our older residents. For career advancement or personal gain, we have a branch of Central Community College. And the thriving Nebraska Prairie Museum displays a comprehensive look at the region from the mid-19th Century to the present day.

Holdrege is also home to well-respected medical groups, a modern medical service building offering physical therapy and other specialties, a Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic serving a broad area of Nebraska and Kansas, and Phelps Memorial Health Center, a 25-bed, community owned hospital that features state of the art services to a wide region.

If you're looking for a town that both small enough and big enough, Holdrege might be just the place for you.
